progressive victories in 2017
advocates welcomes the progressive wave that swept the country this tuesday, where candidates who based their campaigns on hate were decisively turned back. we especially congratulate:
- danica roem, who won her election against the author of virginia’s transphobic bathroom bill to become the first openly transgender delegate in u.s. history
- sheila oliver, lt. governor of new jersey and the first black woman elected to statewide office in virginia
- elizabeth guzman, hala alala, and kathy tran, first latina women and first vietnamese woman to serve in virginia’s general assembly
- ayanna pressley, first black woman on the boston city council
- tyler titus, first trans person elected to office in pa
- andrea jenkins, first trans mayor of a major city and first trans person of color elected to any office in the united states.
young people are leading the country forwards, not backwards. they’ll keep pushing our leaders to work for reproductive rights and justice, racial justice, lgbt rights, immigrant rights, and economic justice.
