i have always been careful. i have always been the kind of person who looked before i leapt. the one time i didn't, i was on vacation with a group of girl friends. we were out having a great time and i met a great guy. i decided to take a chance and wound up pregnant.

in many ways i am glad that my mother is no longer alive to see what has happened in the same state that, over forty years ago, gave me a second chance at life; the same state that killed george tiller and now forces women with anencephalic children to bear them. it would break her heart.

i spent 3 months contemplating my life; countless nights awake, weeping, holding my belly and talking to my unborn fetus.
