i was sexually assaulted during my first year of medical school. i went out with friends, had way too much to drink, and went to an after party with people i didn’t know well enough. i wasn’t on birth control because i didn’t intend to be having sex. a few weeks later i found out i was pregnant. even if i hadn’t been impregnated by a rapist, i was neither mature enough, nor could i have continued in my profession as i wished if i had continued the pregnancy. miraculously, the clinic i went to waived the cost of my abortion because i was a member of medical students for choice as a “professional courtesy”. i’m a mom and an emergency physician now and reproductive choice made all the difference in my life.
